Rancho Mirage Public Library

This is the main library serving Rancho Mirage and its environs. Borrowing from its surroundings, the landscape at the new library captures the bold forms and vivid colors indicative of the California High Desert. Strong plant massings mimic the movement of the building forms and outward views from the building are protected and emphasized, taking advantage of the scenic vistas of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto peaks beyond.

The landscape was designed to provide the framework for a living ‘art garden’ utilizing several sculptural works already owned by the City. Creative landform manipulation brings a three-dimensional quality to the space and is intended to create areas for future placement of public art as well. Outdoor terraces geared towards different groups offer a close connection between outdoors and indoors. The Children’s Terrace includes a small amphitheater that encourages educational gatherings and demonstrations. The Adult’s Terrace is intended as a calm retreat with California Fan Palms and a trickling water feature.
